Why do Allied Health Professionals need insurance?
Working closely with your patients is a main part of your role as an allied health professional, and the last thing you need to be concerned about is if something were to go wrong and for a claim to occur. Getting the appropriate types of insurances in place is something which protects you for the long haul.
Some of the reasons why you need to consider business insurance as an allied health profession include:
- it is a requirement of your contract- if you work as a contractor or practice within a health facility, you may be requested to have certain types of insurances in place with specific limits stipulated. Make sure you double-check this and get it have sorted before you start consulting with your clients.
- if you are leasing the premises that your business is operating from, it may be a requirement by your landlord to have Public Liability insurance* and even Glass cover* in some instances
- working within the allied health industry to become a member of certain industry bodies and boards you may need to have you own Professional Indemnity insurance policy in place to join
- if you operate as a mobile allied health professional consider protecting your important tools of trade like laptops, mobile phones and any special equipment which you may need to assist your patients.
Public Liability insurance*
One of the basic types of cover for allied health professionals. Public Liability insurance is intended to protect you and your allied health business if a client, member of the public or other third-party makes a claim against you. This could be due to them suffering an injury or sustaining property damage as a result of your negligent business activities.
An example of this may be when you are providing your client with certain exercises to assistance with their rehabilitation and they suffer an injury as a result of the exercises. It can also extend to provide cover if you were visiting a client at their home and were to accidentally cause damage to their personal property.
Professional Indemnity insurance*
Professional Indemnity insurance is a critical type of protection for businesses that provide specialist services or professional advice, like allied health professionals. It is created to protect your business from claims against your business for losses, resulting from actual or alleged negligent acts or omissions in the delivery of your professional service or advice.
Professional Indemnity insurance will also help with the legal costs associated with responding to or managing claims which are covered by the policy.
One of the main parts of your role as an allied health professional is to give advice to your clients. If a client were to said that the advice you gave them was negligent and claimed for compensation as a result of following your professional advice, this is where your Professional Indemnity insurance cover would provide protection.

- Building*- If you own the building from where you operate your business this Covers you for damage to your building due to fire and other perils listed within the policy wording.
- Business Interruption*- Business interruption provides cover for the loss of income and increased costs of operating your business caused by a specified insured event (such as property damage or fire). It’s designed to assist your business to recover from an insured event by paying ongoing expenses (such as wages or rent).
- Portable Equipment*- Portable equipment (or general property) insurance can cover specified items such as tools, business equipment or electronic items, or unspecified items of lower value.

This is an important cover to think about especially when you are storing and working with sensitive client files that are stored online.
Allied Health Combined Liability Insurance
The package includes coverage for two of the vital covers you need to consider as an allied health professional- Public Liability insurance and Professional Indemnity insurance.
The packaged cover is available to over 200+ types of allied health professions and has a variety of levels of coverage available so you can tailor your policy to suit your allied health business.
- Professional Indemnity Limits from $250,000 to $10,000,000
- Public Liability Limits from $250,000K to $10,000,000
- Insured Turnover up to $5,000,000
One of the advantages of having your Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance with the same provider is that in the event of a claim where you may need to make claim on both policies, your details are all centralised about your business and the claim. This creates a streamlined and drama-free claim experience with the support there for when you need it most.
*The provision of the claims examples are for illustrative purposes only and should not be seen as an indication as to how any potential claim will be assessed or accepted. Cover for a claim will depend on the specific circumstances around the loss and would be subject to the terms and conditions of the policy concerned. Coverage for claims on the policy will be determined by the insurer, not BizCover, and will depend on the specific facts and circumstances involved.
